Bisi Bele Bath

Bisi Bele Bath is a soupy rice loaded with veggie and starch. Please skip over the macros section if you don’t want to feel bad while savoring this south Indian delicacy. :)

Ingredients

Serves 4
  1. 250g raw red lentils
  2. 250g raw white rice
  3. 1 medium sized onion
  4. 2 medium sized tomatoes
  5. 1 large potato
  6. 2 medium sized carrots
  7. 100 g of peas
  8. 2 tbsp bisi bele bath powder, a pinch of turmeric, a pinch of red chilly powder
  9. 2-3 tbsp oil
  10. 0.5 tbsp mustard seeds
  11. 1 tbsp chopped garlic
  12. 1 tbsp tamarind juice (optional)
  13. 40g shredded coconut (optional)

Recipe

  1. Heat 2-3 tbsp of oil on an empty pressure cooker
  2. Add chopped garlic, mustard seeds
  3. Add one medium, thinly sliced onion
  4. Add salt to taste
  5. Stir till onion is brown
  6. Add 2 medium sized, cubed tomatoes and ~40g of shredded coconut
  7. Add ~2-4 tbsp of bisi bele bath powder, a pinch of turmeric, a pinch of red chilly powder. You could vary the proportions according to your preference.
  8. Saute until the tomatoes are cooked and the flavor looks infused
  9. Add red lentils, rice, cubed potatoes, peas and cut carrots and ~750ml water
  10. Add tamarind juice to taste
  11. Pressure cook until the mixture are cooked (2-3 puffs)

In the South Indian language, Kannada, bisi translates to hot, bele means lentils and bath is for concoction. So, be sure to enjoy it while hot!
